Irish Astro Cup, Navan, Ireland

Jack Embling, Ryhs Herd and myself were lucky enough to be invited to the Irish Astro Cup at the Navan circuit, Ireland. Sponsored by L&L Pro Racing. We were very lucky with the weather (“The luck of the Irish”) no rain forecast, Sunny with a slight cold wind all weekend.

We were greeted by Luke Condron and Frank McGoey, they made us feel very welcome and took us round the track facilities on the Friday afternoon. After that we checked in to our hotel and had a couple of Guinness’s, would be rude not to!

Saturday morning we got to the track and had the drivers briefing, the format being 3 practice heats and 3 qualifying rounds then the “Dash for Cash” prize being €100 to the winner! Sundays format was 2 qualifiers then on to the bump up finals and EP final. It was nice that they let the drivers who couldn’t attend Saturdays qualifying attend on the Sunday to do the final 2 rounds of qualifying, but with 3 rounds to count they would be at a slight disadvantage but at least they could race in the bump ups!

Jack Embling TQ’d the 1st round with local Hero and top Irish driver Bradley Baird 2nd.

Next round Brad would use his local knowledge to good use and TQ so it was all even. The track was getting damp like it was in the morning so we found that you needed 3 types of tyre, a super soft with spikes for the damp a soft Mini pin for the dry and then a soft spike tyre for the damp in the evening.

Brad TQ’d again in the 3rd round so he would be last in the reversed grid for the Dash for cash.

In the middle of the day the club put on a BBQ with Burgers and Sausages beautifully cooked and the friendly way they did it was instead of paying for the burgers you put a donation in the box and you could eat as much as you wanted for the day. What a great idea!

Dash for cash was a great close race with Brad & Jack swapping the lead from the first lap! Jack pulled a gap then Brad would close in then in the closing laps Jack made an error and lost the lead for Brad to take the cash!

Some more Guinness’s and early to bed.

Sunday and Jack had to TQ the last 2 rounds to take the overall TQ. We did some changes to the car and sorted our tyre selection out for the ever changing dampness of the track. With a few bobbles Jack managed to take both rounds and secure TQ overall! Rhys Herd getting to grips with the track and putting himself 5th on the grid for the final.

A great drive from Jimmy Chan, local Kyosho driver to take 1st place in the B final and last bump up spot to the Main final. Making it 4 Kyosho’s in the final!

Main event Jack took the lead from the off and looked comfortable pulling a good lead with Ryhs up to second early on, Brad pushing hard for 2nd taking it from Ryhs, then Gary Baird moving up to 3rd place only to have an engine cut mid race, Ryhs getting 3rd back. Fuel stops were a bit manic for me as I was refuelling 3 cars all doing 7:30 stops in the 45 minute final. Last couple of fuel stops and Brad had a cut making Jacks lead more comfortable, While Ryhs was battling the cold and Gary again for 3rd Ryhs having trouble feeling his throttle finger. Then Gary had another cut 2 minutes from the end and was unable to get it restarted, a shame because these two were having a good battle for 3rd!

Jack took the win by a lap with a great drive and the car looking on par all final.

A great event with lots of fun & friendly atmosphere. I would say the best Astro 1/8th track I have been to. So make sure if you have not been to this event make sure you put it in your diary for next year. I will do my best to encourage a lot of the UK Kyosho drivers over next year!

Special Thanks to Luke Condron, Frank McGoey, Colin Whelan, Jimmy Chan and all of the Navan crew for making us so welcome, good jobs lady’s and gentlemen. See you all next year.

Kindest Regards
